Features

Private notes, source material, and recovery tools in one desktop workspace.

Onnoir combines an encrypted desktop vault with rich pages, local media references, canvases, notebooks, graph context, backups, and Markdown export. The beta is built for private local work first.

Encrypted local vault

Create a desktop library, unlock it with your passphrase and recovery key, and keep notebook content off hosted accounts during the beta.

Rich private pages

Write with prose, tasks, links, tables, callouts, folds, margin notes, code blocks, math, Mermaid diagrams, and embedded local media.

Canvases and Cabinet

Keep images, documents, video, audio, source references, and canvas scenes connected to the pages that use them.

Library structure

Move through notebooks, threads, collections, search, Today capture, and Atlas without losing the larger project.

Backups and export

Use Markdown for readable copies and encrypted .onbk backups for exact restore. Verify backups before beta updates.

Desktop controls

Manage appearance, keyboard behavior, writing defaults, privacy, backups, and update checks from local settings.

Pages

Bring the whole research object into one note.

A page can hold text, code, math, Mermaid diagrams, callouts, tables, tasks, margin notes, local files, images, and canvas references, so supporting material stays close to the sentence that needs it.

Shelf

Keep notebooks calm and findable.

The shelf keeps projects visible, while threads, recent work, search, and library context help you move between pages without losing your place.

Cabinet

Keep source material with the work.

Cabinet keeps local media, documents, videos, audio, and canvases attached to notebooks and pages, with readable references instead of remote imports.

Atlas

Map relationships across notebooks, pages, media, and threads.

Atlas gives the library a visible shape, making it easier to see which areas are well-developed and which pages still need another source.

Backups

Readable export and exact recovery are different tools.

Markdown export creates open files you can inspect outside Onnoir. Encrypted .onbk backups preserve the full local library for restore.

Optional services

The desktop app does not depend on cloud features.

The beta is local-first. Future Sync or Publish services may be offered separately as opt-in features. They are not required to write, organize, back up, or export your local library.

Download the public beta.

Available for macOS and Windows. Before each beta update, create and verify an encrypted .onbk backup.
